A study of death due to unintentional accidents and injuries in Khuzestan province during 2001-2005

Background & Aim: In order to improve the health in a society, the specific policies based on statistical information and health indices must be introduced. On the other hand to increase the life expectancy and to decline the death number within different ages, we have to have enough information about the main causes of death. In this paper we study the death from the main group of unintentional accidents and injuries and poisoning in Khuzestan province. Material & Methods: This was a descriptive and cross sectional study. The studied population consisted of all death causes from different unintentional accidents and injuries and poisoning which have been reported to the Khuzestan Legal Medicine Center or Jundishapour University of Medical Sciences, during years 2001-2005. The information of 12895 reported deaths was gathered and entered into the SPSS software. The crude death rates, cause, age and sex specific death rates and years of life lost due to fourteen accidental causes of death in Khuzestan within 5 years period was determined. Findings: The crude death rates due to different accidents and injuries in Khuzestan province during years 2001-2005 were 48.21, 54.91, 61.13, 69.42 and 71.66 per 100000 population, respectively. During the period of study, transport accidents, accidental exposure to smoke, fire and flames and drowned in water were the main causes of death, respectively, and the total years life lost were 56407, 65188, 72200, 84378 and 86336, respectively. The average growth of year life lost within 5 years was 11.08. Finally, the years life lost of men in this period was 2.83, 3.23, 3.21, 3.45 and 3.62 times more than women, respectively. Conclusion: Because of the 11% growth rate due to transport accident during the period of study, more than 30.6% of death from accidental exposure to smoke, fire and flames within women and 50.2% within women aged between 15-25, the immediate action is needed to establish the main reasons of death from the above mentioned causes.
