Introduction: Every year, millions of people are poisoned by various substances. The causes of poisoning could be the reduction of prevention rate of unwanted and accidental poisonings. Identifying the demographic and epidemiological characteristics of patients most exposed to the causes of poisoning can also reduce the costs as well as mortality cases of poisoning.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with a descriptive-analytical approach performed on 213 poisoning patients who were hospitalized in the second half of 2021 in the hospitals of Urmia University of Medical Sciences. Demographic and epidemiological information was collected through questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS Version 23 statistic software.
Results: Out of 213 patients, 54% and 64% were males and females, respectively. Intentional poisoning, 143 (67.1%), and accidental poisoning 68 (31.9%) were recorded. The most important cause of poisoning includes toxic mushrooms (44.4%), Acetaminophen tablets (33.3%), tramadol (27.1%), methadone (17.8%), and detergents (13.2%). The most important symptoms included drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, physical dependence, tolerance as well as respiratory depression.
Conclusion: Public education about nutritional culture, drug and drug use, strictness of drug prescribing rules can reduce the cases of poisoning and the duration of exposure to these toxins and reduce the temporary and permanent side effects.
